The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hameed, has urged Nigerians to embark on nationwide tree planting in order to combat climate change.
He made the charge at the World Environment Day organised by the institution’s School of Agricultural Technology at Iresa-Pupa temporary site of the polytechnic.
The programme, which was attended by the Principal Officers, Deans, Heads of Departments, staff and students, was the institution’s way of contributing to the government efforts of encouraging tree planting.
In his remark, the Rector, who was a lao the Chief Host, said, “World Environment Day is arguably the biggest international day for the environment, held annually by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 1973 and has grown to be the largest global platform on environmental outreach.
“This year’s celebration is hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it is tagged ‘Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience’.
“The simple act of nurturing and cultivating trees stands as a profound and accessible solution to combat many of the pressing and escalating environmental challenges we face.
“By planting more trees, we actively contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby reducing the overall greenhouse gas levels that drive global warming.
“It is interesting to know that the impact of trees extends far beyond regulating atmospheric gases. They play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity by providing habitat and sustenance for countless species of flora and fauna.
“Planting trees, therefore, is not just about replenishing greenery; it is about safeguarding the delicate tapestry of life that sustains our planet’s rich diversity.
So let us unite, as nations, communities, institutions and individuals to plant trees with unwavering commitment and determination. By nurturing and planting trees, we not only contribute to the restoration of our natural ecosystems but also leave a lasting legacy for future generations. For in the act of planting a tree, we sow the seeds of hope, resilience, and sustainable future for our planet and all its inhabitants.”
In her remark as the host at the event, the Coordinating Dean, School of Agricultural Technology, Engr. Dr. Temilola M. Adepoju, thanked the Rector, Registrar, Bursar, Polytechnic Librarian, Academic Board, Management, Heads of Departments and Units, staff and students for the efforts leading to the success of the programme.
The event, whose convener was Dreams Cluster, led by Mrs Temitope S. Akinde, was supported by a range of organizations, including TYNOLLVN, nR World, World Environment Day, the Agricultural Research Institute of Nigeria as well as the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN).
